Two sisters from the coastal community of Maketū, Kārena & Kasey Bird have travelled the world putting New Zealand on the culinary map through their family-inspired cooking.

Kārena & Kasey

Two sisters from Maketū

They’ve cooked for dignitaries, celebrities, and television audiences, and now sisters Kārena and Kasey Bird are cooking for you, our Foodbox Whānau. With credentials and accolades a mile long, these homegrown chefs will be putting their signature stamp on fresh, flavourful Foodbox meals – and we can’t wait!

Their talent for coupling delicious New Zealand food with unique cultural storytelling saw them named as winners of New Zealand Masterchef, and since then the dynamic duo have published award winning cookbooks, starred in their own TV series, and represented Aotearoa at the 2020 World Expo in Dubai.

Kārena and Kasey celebrate their rich Māori heritage through carefully curated cuisine with a focus on sustainability, provenance, and authenticity. Foodbox just got a whole lot more fabulous, and we couldn’t be more excited!

Chicken & lemongrass broth with udon noodles
Our sister Michaela loves making this Asian noodle soup when it is her turn to cook. Asian broths are so simple to make and are really easily adapted to how you like them, by adding or leaving out flavours as you wish.

Caramel fondants
The word fondant can send people into a bit of a panic. Do not fear: we have come up with a recipe that ensures you’ll have a glorious puddle of caramel oozing out onto the plate every time. By piping the caramel into the centre, you will never have to worry when the spoon digs in to find that gooey middle.
